Pros and cons of different roof types

Asphalt Composition Shingles Roof  

Pros

  • Affordable, light, strong, and very durable.

  • Various colors and styles.

  • Fire resistance and prevent the growth of mold, algae and fungi.

  • The shingles can be replaced individually, easily and quickly.

Cons

  • Can break in a very strong storm.

  • Not the most durable option in time (20 years, against a metal roof that can last up to 60).


Metal Roof 

Pros

  • More durable than other roofing. Not maintenance is required.

  • Fire protection (considered the safest roofing material).

  • It withstand hail, rain and snow better than conventional materials.

  • Environmentally friendly (100% recyclable).

  • Energy efficient.

Cons

  • More expensive than other types of roof systems.

  • Noisy in case of rain or hail storm, or when the temperature changes due to the expansion and contraction of the material.

  • If a part is to be replaced after several years, there may be a change in tonality due to natural color degradation.


Tile Roof

Pros

  • Easy to maintain and repair.

  • Durable and will last a long time.

  • More energy efficient and better for the environment than another type of roof.

  • Fire resistant (not combustible material). No special treatment is needed to achieve such protection.

Cons

  • If the roof tilt is low, there could be problems with drainage and water damage.

  • Slippery when wet or cold.

  • Tile roofs can crack and break if hit by a hailstone.

  • Dangerous if there is a strong storm or fire (tiles could fall off the roof and become projectiles).

  • Expensive (because of the durability and aesthetic qualities)


Wood Shingles Roof

 

Pros

  • Lightweight and easy to install.

  • Eco friendly (it doesn't release harmful chemicals into the air).

  • Less expensive than other roofing options.

  • Natural appearance.

Cons

  • Wood shingles are prone to rot in the short term.

  • It can leak, crack and break after a few years.

  • Not fire retardant.

  • Not waterproof.

  • Vulnerable to damage from pests and mold.

  • It can vary in color over time due the sun.


PVC Roof

Pros

  • Waterproofing (the best choice for flat roofs due the water accumulates zones).

  • Environmentally friendly material (they are 100% recyclable membranes).

  • Lss expensive than metal and other materials.

  • Lightweight, affordable and easy to install.

  • Fire and wind resistant.

Cons

  • Susceptible to leakage if no precautions have been taken during installation.

  • It is necessary to keep clean the roof to prevent mold growth and leakage.

  • Not good in cold climates (when is too cold, PVC becomes brittle and can crack or even shatter if walked on).
